Hi All,

I said that I was generally interested in this area of endeavor and so I have at the prodding of admin2 started a thread.

What I am particularly interested in, is how and why spells are created in the way that they are and how the creation method affects their effects.

I know this sounds a bit academic, and I apologise. I really want to know the best way to make them and to learn from all of you and all of those who have gone before me.

So it is both historic and contempary spells.

Thanks

Shadow I got cufuffled and started a thread on spell casting, not sure if you may want to move it and put it beneath this one or vice versa.  Apologies if I have duffed the job up.

Hi Shadow,

I don't call it performing a spell but working magick.  Most magick comes from within and what instinctively feels right.  From the covens I have been a member of I have been taught many different ways of doing things.  From these and from my instinctual feelings I do a number of things which, to me, are magickal acts.

I firmly believe that magick should never be used if there is any way in the mundane world to achieve anything.  There is always a pay back for using magick in such instances.  Also ethically one should never do anything that is against the free will of another. Never, ever do magick for someone who has not asked for you to do it no matter how well intentioned you think you are.  Lastly, be ever so careful about what you wish for - you might just get it and it might not be what you want.

I can think of three examples of magick going pear shaped.  Two friends of mine asked for magickal help to lose weight.  They both got gastroenteritis - and both lost a hell of a lot of weight in a short period.  I once asked for help for an interview I was going to and performed brilliantly at it only for the job to go to the internal candidate who was going to get the job all along.  Another friend wished for money and had an accident from which he gained a lot of compensation - but ended up in a wheelchair.

Good luck with your magick making.

It is all about shaping reality, or rather your own perception of reality and thus altering reality to fit your taste.

Taking a quote from Uncle Al (Alister Crowley) and turning it around a little to fit with the Discordian mindset, we have,

"Do what you want shall be the whole of the law, just remember no one likes an a******"

Also I would remind always that magick is an unmeasured force and can be a tricksey creature. You never really can be sure what you'll get. All things are chaos and chaos is in all things and thus is doubly true of magick. Momma Eris welcomes one and all but she will enjoy playing all the more with those who bring chaos upon themselves dabbling in areas they do not understand. As such I use magick fleatingly and advise always caution and moderation.

First rule of thumb,

Reality is a creature of your own creation. It can be manipulated and molded to suit one's own disires.

Second rule of thumb,

Our disires may be twisted in their return to us always be sure you now exactly how you are altering your reality.

Third rule of thumb,

Chaos ALWAYS finds a way.

I see it slightly differently,

there are lots of different types of spells, and lots of diifferent religions use them, im a firm believer that christian prayer is a form of spell casting, one that is stronger when mass cast, (though try telling most christians that!) like most things its shaping your mind to affect the energy around you (or not around you.) i tend to think that mostly so long as your intentions are 'noble' side effects are not a serious problem, the problems come when our destructive natures interact with magic.

im not a huge believer in spell components, more a fan of using yourself, and your own powers, i tend to struggle with deeply ritual magic.
